When you visit this place, you would think that this is an open air art gallery. There are canvasses everywhere portraits are drawn in almost everywhere. Artists from all over France go to this place to earn a dollar or two by making sketch pictures of the tourists. And looking back in the history of Montmartre, this place has stayed the same as it is. Decades ago, artists from all over Paris are near starvation because no one will buy their artwork. They need to earn something or else they will die. The hills of Montmartre somehow their targeted location and during those times they would sit in their chair facing a canvass and waiting for customers to pay them pennies so they can support themselves. It never stopped and until now there are still artists there. Imagine the great artist Picasso used to have a place here. You can almost see how it feels to be near broke with just pennies in hand to create a great picture.
Around the square, you’ll find various mini-shops that sell gifts. You can get yourself some souvenirs commemorating how important this place is to modern art. From this square, you can also visit the important places in Montmartre. They are practically walking distance from each other. You really won’t need a personal guide to get you to these places. They are practically self learning with the information that you can get either online or in the information catalogs in these places.
Among the places near Place du Tertre is the towering landmark of Basilica pf the Sacred Hear. Near to the Basilica and therefore to the square is the must visit museum of Salvatore Dali. With more than 300 works of art, you’ll never have a dull time getting to know more about the artist through his works of art. Being in Montmartre is like being transported to a few decades ago. People are having the time of their lives and the arts can be felt so much you can even cut a knife through it. |
