If you’re in Montmarte, even though you really want to just have a great time, you got to appreciate their history. In the early times, only the nuns have the guts to live outside Paris against all odds. What drove the people to this place was not the natural beauty of the place but the fact that the nuns that live hear has the knack of creating the best wines in the region. With the blink of an eye, the town is now full of bars and taverns. It slowly became the favorite hangout of artist. Maybe the idea of having fun all the time removes opens the creative side of the artist. Van Gogh and Monet are some of the artists that passed through Montmarte and have established a studio.

 

Going back to the history of Montmarte, one of the original structures that you will find is the tower Basilica of Sacre Coeur. As we have said, it’s not the bohemians who started to come here started the buzz about the beauty of the place but the religious people. This Romano-Byzantine structure may have been finished only in the early part of the 20th century but its location is one of the best in Paris: perched on top of the hill, any visitor of the basilica will be able to see the whole of Montmarte.

The structure was built in 1875 after the city of Paris decided to make use of the hill in Montmarte. To decide who will design the architect of the basilica, the city held a competition that were participated by 77 architects. Among the design presented, it was the idea of Paul Abadie was selected.

When you speak about the actual architecture of Sacre Coeur, you’ll be able to see something different from all the other structures built in the area. A Romano-Byzantine architecture, this structure is a departure from the traditional Baroque architecture that are found in most of the districts in France. Enter the basilica and you’ll be able to appreciate the structure, the dome almost unifies the building. Inside the building you’ll also find notable objects that are not only important to the Roman Catholics but to classical music as well. The basilica is the home of the four great organs that were built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.
